The Elkhart Historic and Cultural Preservation Commission approved 26 COA 04, authorizing a removable steel‑framed awning on the piazza at the front of the applicant's building.
Kyle Anthony, Planner II, summarized staff’s analysis and recommendation, saying staff recommends approval because the proposed awning is supported by historic photographs (including a pre‑1924 image), will not cover or remove architectural elements that define the building, and can be installed to avoid damaging original materials. Staff told the commission that one of the supporting photos was included in the application packet.
Applicant Jacqueline Beals of Custom Awning described the proposed canopy and confirmed the frame would remain during cold months while the canvas is removed. “The frame stays up over the winter months. The canvas comes down,” Beals said, adding that the design matches existing window awnings and would provide shelter during events.
Commission members clarified seasonal use and that the installation is removable; they noted the design is consistent with traditional green‑and‑white striped window awnings shown in the packet. After a motion and second, the commission approved 26 COA 04 by roll call with unanimous affirmative votes from members present.
The COA approval relies on the proposed details and the historic photographic evidence; standard permits and any required installation inspections remain subject to city process.
