The Lyon County Board of Commissioners approved the final county budget for fiscal year 2026–27 at its May 21 meeting after separating a single line item for individual consideration.
Controller Josh Foley told the board that the Department of Taxation had reviewed the tentative budget and found it in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. During deliberations a commissioner invoked NRS 281A.420 and requested to abstain from the Page 24 line item, a $50,000 annual contribution to the Northern Nevada Development Authority (NNDA).
The board moved to pull Page 24 from the main budget motion and then voted on the NNDA contribution separately. That motion to approve the $50,000 line passed with the board recording the vote as 4 in favor and one abstention by the commissioner who had declared the conflict. The remainder of the final budget — excluding the pulled NNDA line while that item was considered separately — was approved by the board; subsequent motions to approve the final budget package, with the separate handling of Page 24, were recorded as passing by formal vote.
Why it matters: The final budget authorizes county operations for the coming fiscal year and includes routine capital and debt planning. The separate County contribution to NNDA preserves the county’s annual economic development payment while allowing the conflicted commissioner to abstain under state ethics law.
What’s next: Controller Foley and county staff said no other substantive changes were made between the tentative and final budgets. The board also approved related final budgets for several improvement and district boards during the meeting, and staff will continue to track legislative proposals that could affect county fiscal responsibilities.
