The Lyon County Board of Commissioners voted May 21 to approve a four‑year contract with Axon Enterprises for $82,272.95 to supply body‑worn cameras and conducted energy devices (tasers) for the Juvenile Probation Department.
Controller Josh Foley explained that the contract combines previously approved body camera and taser agreements to realize cost savings. He described circumstances in which juvenile probation officers may face juveniles armed with knives or (rarely) firearms and said non‑lethal options can allow officers to de‑escalate without resorting to deadly force.
"There are times when our juvenile probation officers may face juveniles that have weapons like knives, potentially guns," Foley said. "This allows that officer to deescalate that situation without having to shoot the juvenile."
During the public comment period, Robin Biggs of Yerington urged the board to reconsider issuing tasers to juvenile probation staff and said she supported body cameras but opposed tasers for juveniles. Commissioners who spoke in favor emphasized officer safety and training; one commissioner described personal experience with training and preference for non‑lethal options.
The board voted to approve the contract; the recorded vote was 5-0 in favor.
Why it matters: The contract arms a non‑law‑enforcement probation staff cohort with equipment that supporters say improves officer safety and accountability. Opponents argue non‑lethal devices raise ethical and oversight concerns when used in juvenile contexts.
What’s next: The Juvenile Probation Department will implement the Axon system per contract terms. County staff did not provide a detailed training schedule during the public discussion; commissioners said training and safety were priorities.
