Council Member Gale Brewer outlined Intro. 93A, a proposal that would require the Department of Transportation to identify and install at least 5,000 bicycle parking stations across the city over five years, at a pace of 1,000 stations per year.
Brewer said daily bike trips increased from “approximately 550,000 in 2022 to 620,000 in 2026” and cited delivery workers (she said the city has about 65,000 to 85,000 delivery workers) as part of the demand for secure bike storage. The bill would prioritize local decision‑making on siting through community boards, elected officials and stakeholders, with goals to reduce sidewalk clutter and make bike storage safer.
The proposal also calls for a public map of installed stations and a detailed report at the end of the five‑year rollout tracking progress, cost and improvements. Brewer thanked Transportation Alternatives, Conservation Voters, Bike New York, Street Utopia and legislative staff for assistance in developing the legislation.
