A representative of the Northern Neck Middlesex Free Health Clinic briefed the Northumberland County Board of Supervisors on service expansions and a looming funding risk tied to state Medicaid changes.
The presenter said the clinic hired a full-time dentist who provides crowns, bridges and bite guards in addition to extractions and fillings; the clinic also secured a full-time pharmacist and expanded a peer-led recovery program. "We were able to hire a full-time dentist. We're very excited because he not only accepted the job, but he bought a house," the presenter said, adding that the expanded services allow the clinic to offer higher-value care at much lower cost to patients.
The presenter flagged an expected policy shift in 2027 that will reduce Medicaid coverage for some residents — a "cliff" that could increase uninsured visits and financial pressure on safety-net providers. The clinic representative described recent cases where patients reported insurance-premium increases and said staff are preparing for higher demand and more complicated eligibility screening. "There's a big cliff coming with Medicaid, and that is going to hit in '27," the presenter said.
The clinic representative urged the board to consider budget support where possible, citing partnerships with VCU School of Dentistry and other hospitals, and said the clinic has used grant funding and collaborations to keep patient costs down even as demand climbed more than 100% year over year.
