County staff flags sheriff’s office timekeeping problems and asks board to change payroll oversight

Travis briefed the board on identified timekeeping problems within the sheriff’s office, saying the county discovered issues related to dual compensation and payroll accuracy that require corrective controls beyond internal sheriff’s-office processes.

"We did identify some timekeeping problems within the sheriff's office as it relates to dual compensation and we're trying to make some corrections," Travis said, adding that some changes will require commissioner-level action because the board oversees finance and funding.

County administration recommended the board adopt a resolution changing oversight around payroll to ensure employees are paid accurately and in compliance with applicable state and county requirements. Commissioners said they had hoped to question the sheriff directly but that the sheriff was not present for the workshop; they instructed staff to bring the matter for formal action at the next meeting.

Staff framed the next step as preparing a resolution and any implementing documents for board consideration; no formal action was taken at the workshop.
