Lauder Hill approves Broward sponsorship to host FIFA-area activities, will administer $125,000 program

Lauder Hill's City Commission voted unanimously on May 18 to approve Resolution 26R05-88, accepting up to $125,000 in reimbursement-based sponsorship funding from Broward County tied to the Broward "Welcomes to World" initiative for 2026 FIFA-related activities. The city was designated by the county as the lead municipality to manage regional activities and to administer municipal subawards to participating cities.

City Manager Kenny Hobbs told commissioners the county split two $250,000 allocations between competing proposals and selected the Rogers-backed program that set aside $125,000 for a lead municipality. Under the arrangement, $60,000 is earmarked for a regional activity at the county regional park on June 7; another $65,000 is available for towns and cities to apply to Lauder Hill on a first-come, first-served basis. The subaward pool requires participating municipalities to provide a matching contribution; Hobbs said both cash and in-kind match (police, fire, cleaning, staff time) may qualify.

The commission heard from staff and briefly opened the item to public comment (none). After a motion and second, the city clerk called the vote: Vice Mayor Campbell, Commissioner Dunn, Commissioner Hodgson and Mayor Denise Grant all voted yes and the resolution passed 4-0.

Mayor Denise Grant closed the item with a light-hearted request for marquee attendees, saying, "Vice Mayor, please ensure that we get to see Messi and Ronaldo and Joshua Grant," an exchange captured on the meeting record.

What happens next: City staff will execute the county agreement and begin administering the regional event funding and the municipal subaward process. Eligible municipalities will apply to Lauder Hill for awards from the $65,000 pool; the city will decide award amounts under the rules set by Broward County and the sponsorship agreement.
