Coffey County approves $58,600 replacement patrol vehicle after crash

The Coffey County Commission on Tuesday voted unanimously to approve the sheriff's request to purchase a replacement patrol vehicle after the prior unit was totaled in a May 8 crash on I-35.

Sheriff Johnson requested authorization to buy a 2026 Chevy Tahoe (VIN ending in 7012) from Cromani Chevrolet for $58,600. The chair moved the purchase, which the commission approved to be paid from the sheriff's 2026 budget with the expectation of reimbursement when insurance settles the claim.

Commission discussion focused on equipment transfer and insurance reimbursement logistics. Staff said equipment inside the totaled vehicle appears largely salvageable; the county will coordinate de-installation and re-installation of radios and cameras, and pursue reimbursement through the insurer. One commissioner noted the county has video evidence of the collision and expected the insurer to cover most costs.

The motion passed on a unanimous voice vote with four commissioners in favor and one absent. No additional conditions were attached; staff will coordinate procurement and reimbursement documentation with the county counselor's office.
