The Ann Arbor Parks Advisory Commission voted to approve a 15-year agreement with the Friends of the Ann Arbor Skatepark to continue the group's operation and programming at the municipal skate facility.
Pete Pasque, president of the Friends of the Ann Arbor Skatepark, presented the group's work and mission, saying the organization aims to “promote and preserve the Ann Arbor Skate Park as a permanent, inclusive, and welcoming public resource accessible and open to all members of the skateboarding community.” He outlined programs including the All-Girl Skate program (running since 2014 and serving roughly 20 skaters per session), the Peace Skate partnership with Peace Neighborhood Center that brings elementary and middle-school campers for weekly enrichment, and fundraising work such as an annual art auction.
Staff (Josh) described the agreement as a continuation of a long-standing partnership; he said it contains no significant changes and will ensure operational continuity. Commissioners thanked the Friends group for programming and stewardship. A member moved and the commission then approved the agreement by voice vote.
The agreement’s practical effects, as described in the presentation, include continued support for youth programming (equipment and paid instructors), stewardship and basic maintenance assistance, and an ongoing partnership between the nonprofit and city parks staff. Staff said the agreement will be brought forward to council (as applicable) for final contracting processes.
