Police chief reports promotions, K-9 certifications and enforcement reminders; golf-cart permits near last year’s total

Chief Munt updated the board on staffing and operational items for the Madison Police Department.

Munt said the department held a promotion process and promoted two officers to detective positions, but those officers will not assume full detective duties until three new officers complete the FTO process (he estimated another eight weeks). He said the department is currently two officers short and that staffing has been a long-term priority.

"We promoted two of our officers to the position of detective... however, they will not be able to take that position until we get our three new guys out of the FTO process," Munt said. He also reported that, as of the next day, the department would have three certified K‑9 teams.

Munt reminded vendors that selling food from a mobile truck requires a peddler permit and asked residents to report trucks without the green peddler permit displayed. He also said about 900 golf-cart permits have been sold this season, approaching recent yearly totals of roughly 1,000.

The chief characterized overall operational progress as slow but steady, with emphasis on completing training requirements and restoring the K‑9 and FTO capacity before moving detectives permanently into investigative roles.
