Board approves Parkview middle school schedule with 25-minute daily home room and elective business course

The Mukwonago School District board approved a proposed schedule and course requirements for Parkview Middle School on May 18, including a 25-minute daily home room designed for stability, academic support, community building and skill development.

Staff described a blue/gold day structure: blue days for schoolwide lessons and gold days for targeted instructional time such as academic support and intervention. The plan embeds academic and career planning (ACP) lessons into home room, provides time for counselors and social workers to meet with students, allows retakes and additional time for students with IEPs or 504 plans, and aims to reduce missed instructional time.

The board also approved moving the business and employability skills course to elective status so students retain greater choice among electives; staff said the content will still be delivered through ACP lessons, core classes, extracurriculars and CTE offerings. Administrators recommended a moratorium on adding new classes during the transition and said they expect many students will still enroll in the business course despite it being optional. The board directed staff to continue planning, prepare common home room agendas and training, conduct administrative walkthroughs, and report back after the first year of operation.

Next steps: staff will implement the schedule as proposed, provide teacher training and templates for home room, monitor participation and intervention data, and return to the board with any recommended adjustments after the 2027–28 school year.
