Cheshire committee recommends Beata Seleziowsky to full board for supervisor of special education

The Cheshire Board of Education committee on May 18 voted to recommend that the full board appoint Beata Seleziowsky as the district’s supervisor of special education.

Seleziowsky, introduced to the committee as the finalist following a multi-stage interview process, told members she is currently a school psychologist at Pine Grove Elementary School in Avon and has served as PPT chair since 2020. She highlighted her work leading teams through eligibility decisions, coordinating interventions, and supporting families and teachers.

The candidate described her approach as rooted in relationship building and collaborative problem‑solving. “I really enjoy the work that I do,” Seleziowsky said, adding that she values spending time in classrooms, observing both general and specialized instruction, and supporting teams through difficult conversations about services.

Committee members asked about Seleziowsky’s career timeline and how she would approach an entrance plan. She said her early steps would include classroom observations, meeting teachers and students, and working closely with staff during ESY to understand district support models. She also described her emphasis on tier‑one instruction within MTSS and cautioned that insufficient classroom differentiation can lead to inflated referrals to special education.

The committee discussed practical questions including team composition, service delivery, and responses to independent educational evaluation (IEE) requests. Seleziowsky said the district provides written responses within 10 days when parents request an IEE and that staff and central office examine whether the request challenges evaluation completeness or eligibility decisions before deciding next steps.

A motion to recommend Seleziowsky’s appointment to the full board was made and seconded; the committee indicated the recommendation will be considered by the full board on Thursday.
