District credits free participation and middle‑school expansion for rising athletic involvement

Athletic staff presented data and examples showing expanded middle-school offerings increased participation, community engagement and positive student outcomes. Josh Khan (middle-school athletic coordinator) described adding boys and girls basketball and wrestling to previous cross-country and track programs, saying the expansion “more than doubled opportunities available to our students.” He highlighted middle-school track successes including a district athlete with one of the fastest 400-meter times in the state.

Don Lean and Jay Miner (West and South Albany athletic leadership) credited district support and the decision to continue no student participation fees with boosting family access and participation. Jay Miner said participation correlates with improved attendance, fewer behavioral incidents and higher GPAs: at South Albany, students with no participation had an 84.1% attendance rate and a 2.39 GPA, while participation in multiple seasons was associated with higher attendance and GPA.

Staff asked the board for continued support on volunteer recruitment and equipment wish lists (for example, wrestling singlets and shoes) and explained plans to refine tournament scheduling and expand community partnerships. Board members praised the coaches and cited community benefits including packed stands at middle-school meets.
