Gahanna council approves supplemental appropriation for arts programming; one abstention

Gahanna City Council voted to adopt Ordinance 0012‑2026 on May 18, which authorizes a supplemental appropriation from the general fund to support cultural and artistic programming, including a partnership with the Gahanna Area Arts Council.

Councilmembers praised the arts council and the potential to leverage outside matching funds. Councilmember Pedova argued that public art and programming foster creativity and community identity, urging early inclusion of the Arts Council in Creekside planning. "Creativity is something that can't be replaced with AI," she said, urging investment in public art as a long‑term community benefit.

Councilmember McGregor said while she questioned using government funds for arts, she supported the ordinance to access matching funds and evaluate results. The ordinance passed by roll call; Councilmember Bowers abstained, stating her father serves on the Gahanna Area Arts Council and, following city‑attorney guidance and Ohio Ethics Commission advice, she needed to abstain from voting.

No amendments were made to the ordinance at second reading; it was adopted as presented. The council thanked the Arts Council and administration for their work. The ordinance will enable the city to accept and deploy funds to support cultural programming in partnership with the arts council.
