Select Board votes to read Declaration in full at July 2 event with contextual preface

The Acton Select Board voted May 18 to read the U.S. Declaration of Independence in full during the July 2, 2026 Independence Day ceremonies, provided the reading is introduced with contextual remarks.

Board member Pam Nurse urged the board to preface the reading because the Declaration’s 27 grievances include language that could be hurtful to Indigenous people; she said the board should be mindful of the town’s stated commitment to respect and inclusion and seek to provide historical context for the grievances.

"Any type of hurtful speech or action targeting anyone for who they are is unacceptable here," Pam said. She recommended a short contextual statement—similar to how broadcasters preface historical readings—and suggested the town invite local Indigenous groups to participate if they wish.

Other board members agreed that a preface would be appropriate. One member cited NPR’s practice of prefacing the reading on July 4 by noting the document contains offensive language.

The board’s motion, which was moved and seconded during the meeting, directed staff to ensure the scheduled reading on July 2 include introductory contextual remarks; the board also encouraged staff to consult with the town’s 250th‑anniversary committee and to reach out to Indigenous representatives about participation. The motion carried unanimously.

What’s next: Staff will coordinate the content of the preface and follow up on invitations to local Indigenous representatives; the July 2 event will include family activities, vendors and an evening tribute concert with a laser show in lieu of fireworks.
