Board approves Tri-C College Credit Plus support lab to help students earn college credit

The Buckeye Local Board of Education unanimously approved a proposal May 12 to create a College Credit Plus (CCP) support lab and to host a Tri-C Associates Pathway initiative at the high school.

Superintendent Stanton described the project as an on-site support lab for students enrolled in CCP courses and as a way to expand an associates-degree pathway in partnership with Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C). Administrators presented data showing higher failure rates among some students taking CCP classes off-site and argued the lab would provide targeted academic support, counseling and faculty oversight.

Stanton said the start-up cost is currently estimated between $42,000 and $48,000; the district is seeking grants and community partnerships that officials said could substantially lower the net cost. Administration proposed funding the lab and furnishing it with help from community groups including the Buckeye Education Foundation; estimated recurring costs were described as roughly $15,000 per year for the next three years after outside support.

The lab would occupy underutilized media center space during the school day; the district said it will relocate the media center within the building and expects to reuse the lab space for middle-school needs when grade configurations change in later project phases. Board members expressed support for the program as a way to retain college-bound students and provide on-site academic scaffolding.

The motion passed by roll call during the non-consent agenda; staff said work to equip the lab would begin after the school year ends so the space is ready for students next year.
