Commission debates selling narrow riverfront parcel; no motion to list

The commission discussed whether to list a narrow, city-owned sliver of property (approximately 73.5 feet wide) off Third Street that previously carried a billboard and provides potential access to larger riverfront parcels the city owns.

Staff described the parcel’s history as acquired to accommodate a storm sewer and said any sale would require the city to retain easements to protect the existing storm infrastructure. Commissioners noted that while the front portion of the parcel is relatively flat and used by the city for mowing, much of the wedge-shaped riverfront property behind it is low and seasonally wet, which complicates development.

Neighbors and a nearby resident spoke briefly; commissioners discussed the desirability of securing permanent access to about 8.4 acres of city-owned riverfront and asked staff to provide more information on potential uses, other properties involved, and the legal implications of declaring the parcel surplus. Several commissioners said they wanted more study before putting the strip on the market. No motion was made to list the parcel, so the item was not advanced.
