At its May 22 meeting, the Los Angeles City Council presented certificates and public recognition to a range of community groups and individuals: a university boxing program described as part of a gang-intervention and youth leadership initiative, Fleet Week participants and naval bands, LA River volunteer stewards, leaders honored for Asian American/Pacific Islander Heritage Month and the North Hollywood High School girls basketball champions.
Council members and program leaders emphasized partnerships between the city, nonprofits and universities. The chair introduced Councilmember Hugo Soto Martínez’s recognition of students in a District 12 youth leadership program and then presented a larger recognition for a boxing club led by coach Daisy García and mentors including Omar López. "El boxeo puede transformar las vidas de las personas porque requiere la honestidad, el coraje y la determinación," said the coach who introduced the club; Daisy García noted locations such as Lincoln Heights, Pico Union and Eco Park where the program operates and highlighted scholarship recipients.
The Council also welcomed Fleet Week partners and a southeast naval band that performed for the chamber, and Port Commission and emergency management officials described coordination around public-safety planning for Fleet Week and other large events. Port commissioner Yolanda de la Torre thanked naval partners and encouraged Angelinos to attend Fleet Week events across the city.
River stewardship groups were recognized for a multi-year volunteer partnership to restore bike paths and improve safety along the LA River; speakers credited community organizing with coordinating multiple jurisdictions and working with the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA) on contracts that allow rangers and patrols to support maintenance and public access.
Councilmembers closed the ceremonial portion by honoring local leaders in Koreatown and presenting certificates to the North Hollywood girls basketball team after a citywide championship. The clerk confirmed that consent items 1–7 and 9 were ready for vote and the Council approved them before the presentations.
Votes at a glance: The Chair presented a motion by Price to approve minutes and consent items on the agenda; the clerk reported the items carried in the initial roll call/voice vote (items 1–7 and 9 were approved; mover: Price; seconder: not specified; tally announced by Chair as 11 in favor).
