The Mahoning County Board of Commissioners met May 21 and approved a slate of procurement contracts, change orders and appointments as part of routine county business.
The board voted to advertise bids for traffic-signal maintenance and to solicit work for rehabilitation and relining of sanitary sewers in the Mahoning County Metropolitan Sewer District after the sanitary engineer, Jill, summarized the scope and estimated costs. Commissioners also approved a series of non-general-fund housing and lead-hazard agreements, including a Glenwood Avenue project listed at $594,593 and multiple smaller contracts for home-repair and lead-hazard control ranging from $5,887 to $45,545.
Jamal, a county staff presenter, described a Clerk of Courts support agreement with Ohio Time Corp estimated at $10,060. The engineering office presented vehicle-repair and emergency-sewer items, including diagnostic work for a 2017 International dump truck (estimated $2,607.16) and emergency sewer repairs (estimated $7,500). The board approved change orders for CHIP home-rehab work with Gary Krim Inc. ($680 and $730) and a services agreement with MS Consultants for stormwater pollution-prevention updates ($13,493).
The board also considered a resolution to purchase a sewer cleaner and related equipment and an equipment agreement cited in the agenda at about $474,969. Separately, staff brought a resolution approving a moral-obligation payment of $4,998.80 to VK International, doing business as Red Roof Inn, for relocation services; commissioners approved that resolution.
A presenter who identified himself as the law director for Boardman Township said the township, as a Home Rule entity, has asked the county to continue providing legal services. The presenter said the county and township had previously used an annual compensation arrangement and offered a $75,000 proposal as a realistic figure for continuing services. "We decided to take a year and assess how much work was being done and what a realistic amount was for compensating us," the law director said. The commission acknowledged the proposal; the transcript records discussion but does not show a separate motion or vote recorded on that specific item during this meeting.
Commissioners approved multiple personnel appointments, including a reappointment to the Mahoning County Children's Services Board effective June 1, 2026. A motion to adjourn was passed at the end of the session; the next meeting was announced for May 27 at 10 a.m. at the Butler Institute of American Art.
