Ben Houchin, chief deputy sheriff, told the Lancaster County Board of Commissioners on May 21 that an unmarked department pickup was totaled in a crash near 29th and Cornhusker about three weeks earlier and that insurance will reimburse $22,279.04. He said the department proposes buying a Ford F-150 through the state bid for $43,127 and reusing existing equipment from the totaled vehicle, though installation of that equipment would cost about $13,000.
"After applying insurance funds, approximately $33,847.96 will come from the department's budget," Houchin said. He added the department still expects to return over $200,000 to the County budget barring unforeseen circumstances.
Commissioner Sean Flowerday moved to approve the purchase; Vice Chair Chelsea Johnson seconded. Commissioners Christa Yoakum (chair), Chelsea Johnson (vice chair), Sean Flowerday, Matt Schulte and Rick Vest voted yes. The motion carried 5-0.
The county will proceed with the purchase through the state bid and schedule equipment installation so the vehicle can be returned to service. The sheriff's office reported the plan balances replacement needs with reuse of salvageable equipment and does not anticipate additional budgetary impacts beyond the reported figures.
What happens next: staff will complete the procurement and installation process and return the vehicle to service; no separate board action was specified in the public minutes.
