The City of St. Augustine Historic Architectural Review Board approved several actions at its May 31 meeting and set conditions on replacements and designs intended to protect historic fabric.
Expedited demolition: The board approved a certificate of demolition for the residential structure at 9 Masters Drive (expedited item), finding no evidence it is a local landmark. Staff noted limited salvageable items (cast-iron sinks and tubs) and asked the applicant to consider due-diligence salvage where possible.
Fence approval: The board approved a certificate of appropriateness for a 6-foot stockade privacy fence at 78 Spanish Street subject to staff review of final location and gate details. Applicant Joe Tyson said the fence will start at the rear of the house, run along the west property line and include a roughly 4-foot gate; staff will confirm the fence remains inside the property line and administratively approve gate style and hardware.
Bayview garage demolition: The board approved partial demolition for the detached garage at 30A Bayview Drive, accepting the applicant's condition assessment (flooding, low ceiling and limited functionality) and conditionally approving a replacement design that meets the Secretary of the Interior's standards, subject to revised door design and submittal of replacement drawings and a record of the existing garage.
Oneida street partial demolition: The board approved partial demolition and rehabilitation work at 68 Oneida Street to allow raising and rehabilitating the c.1871'1885 building, opening the enclosed front porch and removing later rear additions, but required the applicant to revise the mass and roof/dormer treatment of the proposed rear addition to better match historic scale. The board also encouraged retaining or reconstructing the front yard masonry wall if feasible.
Votes were taken by roll call; in each case the motions carried by the affirmative votes recorded in the public roll calls. Several approvals were conditional: staff and the applicant must provide revised drawings, material and detail clarifications or records before final permits are issued.
