Mayor Kirk Watson on Friday read a proclamation declaring May 2026 as Emergency Medical Services Week in Austin, praising Austin-Travis County EMS for a half-century of service to residents and visitors.
The proclamation, read by Watson, said Austin-Travis County EMS "has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the community, responding to hundreds of thousands of calls for service, and continually advancing the practice of mobile health care." Watson presented the document to members of the department and invited them forward for a group photo.
Rob Lukritz, identified in the transcript as the city's EMS chief, thanked the mayor and council and described the past year as “monumental” for Austin and Central Texas. "Every single time, the men and women of the Austin Travis County EMS have stepped up to serve," Lukritz said, and he noted the national EMS Week theme for the year, "improving outcomes together."
The chief highlighted coordination with hospitals, public-safety partners and community organizations and said EMS personnel are often required to make “critical decisions under the most challenging circumstances.”
The council’s recognition is ceremonial; no formal vote or policy change was recorded in the transcript. The proclamation was followed by brief remarks, a photo opportunity and the council moving to additional ceremonial agenda items.
