The Amelia County Board of Supervisors voted during a special meeting to direct staff to advertise the proposed fiscal year 2027 county budget for a public hearing in June.
Chair (speaker 1) said the motion does not approve the budget but moves it forward for public comment: “we are not approving this budget. What we are doing is just simply sending this to the public so we can hold a public hearing on it in June.” Eric (speaker 4), a staff member, told the board preliminary figures remain subject to final balancing and staff will be available to answer questions as the process continues: “preliminary figures are always subject to final balance.”
The board was told the property tax rates carry no increase under the proposal: 46¢ per $100 of assessed value on real estate and $4.25 on personal property. Staff also noted several fee adjustments in the packet, including changes to water, sewer and animal control fees.
A motion to direct staff to coordinate advertising for the FY27 budget was placed on the floor and approved; the transcript records one supervisor opposed to the motion. Board members asked that staff share the final advertisement proofs with supervisors before publication so members can verify the amounts and text. Eric (speaker 4) said staff will finalize the numbers in the advertisement and coordinate dates for the public hearing.
The board’s next procedural step is to hold the advertised public hearing in June, during which the budget will be subject to public comment and further board action.
