Amber Green presented takeaways from an International Economic Development Council (IEDC) course and explained why the city’s economic development strategy is shifting from industry attraction to place‑making.
"People are no longer coming for jobs. People are coming for place," Green said, describing the growth of a creative economy and the importance of housing diversity, arts and small‑business investment in attracting and retaining residents. She described a "housing ladder" concept — from emergency and temporary housing through rental, starter ownership, move‑up housing and downsizing options — and said a complete ladder is necessary for sustainable growth.
Green also noted partnerships that support downtown revitalization and workforce retention and offered to share course slides and scholarship information for commissioners interested in the IEDC training.
What's next: Green said she can connect commissioners with course registration information and local scholarship opportunities through utilities.
