Senate confirms Siva Gunda to California Energy Commission after broad bipartisan support

The California State Senate confirmed Siva Gunda to a reappointment on the California Energy Commission on Monday following floor remarks praising his leadership on energy issues.

Senator Grove (speaker 9) presented Gunda’s nomination and described him as an experienced public servant who helped guide the state through a recent energy market disruption, highlighting his work on petroleum market oversight and demand analysis. Several colleagues, including Senators Laird and Cabaldon, joined Grove in endorsing the nominee, citing his ability to convene stakeholders and balance economic and environmental considerations.

Senator Laird said Gunda "brings people together" and described him as a "treasure" for California. Senator Cabaldon, who noted Gunda is a constituent, described his technical skill and collaborative approach, calling him "an outstanding public servant." Senator Richardson and others also urged an aye vote.

The secretary called the roll; the Senate recorded 37 ayes and 0 no votes. The presiding officer announced, "The appointment is confirmed." The confirmation follows a Rules Committee recommendation and floor consideration.

Gunda has served as vice chair of the Energy Commission since 2021 and has been identified on the floor as lead commissioner on petroleum market oversight, energy assessment and reliability analysis.
