MUNCIE — A resident told the Muncie Board of Public Works and Safety on May 20 that the city should do more to ensure the municipal pool can open for the summer, citing staff shortages and recent changes to pool management.
At the meeting, the resident identified by the chair as Mr. Yentzer said he had learned at a park board meeting that “they don't have a manager” and that “they can't get it open this weekend.” He urged the city to provide more attention and staffing so children would have a place to go.
Board members and staff responded that the pool was not scheduled to open because of mechanical problems with pumps. Deputy Controller Matt Waggly said the sanitary district provided labor while the city purchased parts and performed upgrades. During the exchange the board confirmed it had hired an assistant director; staff said they are continuing repairs and upgrades.
Yentzer questioned the cost and whether work had been completed, noting community expectations for summertime pool access. Board members said they would continue work on repairs and administrative staffing as needed. The meeting adjourned with staff directed to continue coordination on the repairs and staffing.
