A council member raised turf-health concerns for the townields and recommended cutting grass a bit higher through the hot summer months to retain moisture and improve root depth. The member said university turf specialists previously recommended raising mower blades to conserve water.
"Raise the blade," the member said, noting higher cuts can conserve moisture and reduce weed pressure. Council asked whether taller grass would increase mowing frequency or interfere with soccer play; staff and council agreed to consult the grounds supervisor (Kelly) before changing mowing schedules.
Separately, a council member asked whether the town could add a fall free-dump weekend in addition to the spring clean-up dumpsters. Staff said the cost of the dumpster program runs roughly $5,000 to $6,000 per event and depends on coordinating with the county's free-dump schedule; council discussed budgeting the expense and agreed staff could add it for consideration in next year's budget.
Council also agreed to provide a volunteer representative to present the mayor's award at Century Elementary the next day. No formal votes were taken on mowing changes or the fall dump; staff will follow up with operational recommendations.
