The board approved several routine items and heard multiple presentations about student programs.
The chair called and the board approved an overnight field trip for Walter J. Barrett students to travel to Washington, D.C., March 4–8, and separately approved overnight travel for Winfrey Bryant Middle School girls basketball in October. The board also approved a Jones Brummet playground and basketball court proposal tied to a TVA grant and fundraising.
Presenters highlighted Castle Heights activities: an art club of 16 third- and fourth-graders with student displays and fundraising that supports teacher grants; a running club started by Donna Crofton with 80 participants that culminated in a downtown children’s race; and a cross-country program run by Marilyn Edwards Peter with 23 participants and 22 individual medals. Miss Samson presented a 12-person ESPY administrator cohort and certificates were recognized.
On community services, presenters described the district’s summer feeding and outreach work: they said the program is slated to serve 26 community sites (including SACC and summer arts program locations), operates with a staffing pool of roughly 16 employees and two bus drivers, and has served “over 300,000” meals since the program began. Presenters also said the program has distributed more than 50,000 books and partners include Vulcan and Rotary; presenters noted Department of Human Services funding approval was pending.
Votes at a glance: the agenda and consent items (minutes) were approved; motions to approve the Walter J. Barrett overnight trip, the Jones Brummet playground request, and the Winfrey Bryant overnight travel passed at the meeting. A separate motion to issue an RFQ for legal services was proposed and seconded and board members discussed holding a special meeting to review submissions.
