State Historic Preservation Officer Laura Tishman updated the House Corrections & Institutions committee on the Bennington Monument on May 15, saying community meetings showed strong preference for full restoration and that engineers are finalizing a report on exterior and seismic issues.
"The options, the only option anybody picked was full restoration," Tishman said summarizing the community feedback. She told members that structural engineers contracted to the project have completed exterior examinations and are drafting a summary report; the head engineer has retired but is contracted back to support continuity on the project.
Tishman said engineers are available to speak to the committee and that the preservation office is awaiting a written summary before scheduling a technical briefing. Committee members expressed interest in a virtual presentation by the engineering team next week so the committee can review findings before further action on funding or project steps.
Next steps: the preservation office will provide the committee with the engineers' summary report when available and coordinate a briefing by the engineering team.
