Assessors approve 1,224 new homestead exemptions and 23 denials; appeals process outlined

The Glynn County Board of Assessors voted to approve 1,224 new homestead-exemption applications and separately approved 23 denials during its meeting.

Chief Appraiser Ryan Lunsford told the board the office processes a heavy volume of homestead applications between Jan. 1 and April 1 and recommended approval for the 1,224 new homesteads while identifying 23 applications with code-based reasons for denial. He said denials do not end an applicant's options: applicants can correct documentation, pursue the Board of Equalization, request non-binding arbitration or a hearing officer review.

Board members moved and seconded the two items separately and approved both motions by voice vote with no recorded opposition. Lunsford emphasized the workload such processing creates for staff and said the office will accept appeals or corrected materials in subsequent years if applicants later meet eligibility requirements.

Why it matters: homestead exemptions lower taxable values for qualifying homeowners and can materially reduce tax bills; this board action affects the taxable status of more than 1,200 properties and establishes which denials will be subject to appeal.
