Goose Creek CISD to adopt 5x5 high school schedule beginning 2026–27

Goose Creek CISD will implement a 5x5 high school instructional schedule beginning in the 2026–2027 academic year, a district presenter said, describing the plan as a “transformative shift” intended to expand electives, strengthen career and technical education (CTE) pathways and help students earn credits faster.

The district presenter said the model will place students in five courses per day each semester with extended 80‑minute class periods. "This will allow students to earn up to five course credits in a semester," the presenter said, adding that "you can earn up to 10 course credits in a single school year." The presenter also said students who need to take an end‑of‑course exam will be able to do so as soon as they complete the course rather than waiting until the end of the school year.

A questioner asked for clarification about course load, saying, "So, with this new 5x5, I only have five classes to keep track of?" The presenter confirmed that most students will have five teachers per day and noted that the schedule is intended to let students remain in extracurriculars — "I can stay in football, take my business classes, and still have room for theater?" the questioner asked; the presenter replied, "Exactly. More focus, more credits, and more choices. That is the power of the 5x5."

District officials emphasized instructional benefits beyond scheduling. The presenter said fewer concurrent classes will allow for deeper instruction, more personalized schedules and faster credit recovery — students who fail a course can retake it the next semester instead of waiting a full year. The presenter added that students in special programs will continue to have their needs met.

On athletics and performing arts, the presenter said teams and performing arts classes will meet daily all year and that student athletes and performers will continue to earn a half credit per semester to remain on track for graduation.

The district closed by urging families with questions to consult school counselors and by directing them to a dedicated 5x5 FAQ page on the district website for details about implementation and scheduling. The district said the change will take effect at the start of the 2026–2027 school year.
