The Washburn School District board on Tuesday approved updated parental leave guidance that replaces gendered terms in the staff handbook and clarifies leave rights and protections for certified staff.
Under the approved guidance, eligible staff will continue to be eligible for 12 weeks of parental leave that covers birth and adoption; the board emphasized the changes are intended to clarify how the time is counted and to protect employees’ positions and benefits while on leave. A staff presenter said the intent is to provide clear expectations for timing, benefits protection and substitute coverage.
During discussion a board member raised concerns about wording that had allowed leave "in the case of medical emergency" before delivery. That board member moved to amend the wording to "medical complication," subject to the district attorney’s approval; the amendment passed, and the board then approved the updated parental leave guidance with that amendment. The meeting record shows one member opposed both the amendment and the final motion.
Why it matters: The revision broadens inclusive language and clarifies eligibility and counting rules for what is paid parental leave, which can affect employee planning and substitute staffing.
Next steps: The revised guidance will be incorporated into the staff handbook and applied beginning with the next school year; the board asked staff to coordinate with legal counsel on the amendment’s final wording.
