Washburn board preapproves purchase of used district truck, caps amount at $50,000

The Washburn School District board approved a preauthorization allowing staff to purchase a used district truck for up to $50,000 when a suitable vehicle becomes available.

Board members said they had lost prior opportunities when listings sold within minutes and noted the existing truck is in poor condition and unsuitable for plowing and other district needs. The preapproval is intended to let staff act quickly rather than wait for the next regular meeting; staff said the authorization ends once a purchase is completed.

The motion passed after discussion; the record shows one member opposed the authorization.

Why it matters: Maintaining an operable fleet is an operational necessity for custodial, grounds and snow-removal work. Preapproval is a procurement convenience to secure time-sensitive used vehicles but does not commit a final purchase to a specific unit or vendor.
