The Education Foundation of Lake County and Lake County Schools announced May 11 that they would cover the cost of internship credit hours for graduates of Lake Sumter State College's new bachelor's in elementary education program.
The foundation representative said 23 students graduated from the inaugural class, with 91% completing paid internship experiences and a program GPA of about 3.57. The district and foundation will cover internship credit hour costs of $1,467 per student for those participating, according to the Education Foundation speaker.
Speakers at the meeting praised the program for placing interns in district classrooms across Lake and Sumter counties, noting that the 23 graduates collectively impacted thousands of K-12 students during their internships. District leaders and the foundation also named program staff and college officials and recognized 19 students who served in Lake County Schools through the program.
The announcement included an on-stage recognition and group photograph for interns and graduates; the board and superintendent encouraged continued partnership with Lake Sumter State College to grow local educator pipelines.
