Two substantive public comments during the meeting focused on student nutrition and community programming.
Tyler Shield, identifying himself as a district parent and a Master of Social Work student, urged the board to reduce or remove juice and chocolate milk from school meals. Shield said children are served juice and chocolate milk twice daily at school and cited American Academy of Pediatrics guidance on added sugar limits; he warned that the combination of both beverages could push students beyond recommended daily added-sugar intake. Shield asked the board to “take this into consideration for the sake of our children and their futures.” The district did not announce any immediate policy change at the meeting.
Allison Barkley, CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of North County, thanked district leaders — naming Superintendent Hazel and after-school director Perez — for a long partnership, described the club’s footprint (11 sites, more than 100 staff, roughly 2,500 youth served) and invited trustees and the public to the organization’s open house and community events the week of April 23. Barkley noted that many club participants are district students and thanked the district for decades of collaboration.
No formal action on nutrition policy or contracting occurred that evening; the board received the comments during the public-comment portion of the meeting.
