The Lapeer City Commission approved the 2026 historic farmers market calendar on April 6 but added conditions after staff and commissioners flagged conflicts with America 250 downtown programming and Independence Day activities.
Commissioner McCarthy moved to approve the market for Wednesdays and Saturdays May 9 through Oct. 24, with exceptions for June 20 and July 4 while staff explores alternate locations and coordination; the motion was seconded and carried after a friendly amendment clarifying staff should work with organizers on the two dates. Mindy, a farmers‑market board representative, told the commission the board submitted its application early and will meet Friday to resolve the two specific dates.
The meeting also considered a Chamber‑sponsored Food Truckfest (four Monday dates) and the Steel Patriots Friday night bike nights. The Food Truckfest was approved after questions about pavilion rental fees and parking logistics; staff will confirm pavilion location and any rental charges. The commission initially denied an eight‑date bike‑night request amid business owner complaints and scheduling overlap with America 250, then approved a compromise: one Friday per month (May–Aug) chosen from the applicant’s proposed dates, excluding June 19 to avoid conflict with America 250 set‑up on June 20.
Why it matters: Commissioners said they wanted to preserve downtown businesses’ access to customers while also supporting community events. Staff was asked to coordinate directly with event organizers on alternate locations, public‑safety plans, and to confirm any pavilion rental fees.
