Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds Craig McKe asked the McGuffey board on May 16 to approve resurfacing the high‑school gym floor using remaining funds from a prior bond issue.
McKe said the floor has not been sanded in more than 10 years and that resurfacing will include sanding to bare wood, repainting with the district’s updated colors and adding appropriate court markings. He described the current project as the last large opportunity to spend money from that bond issue; bond proceeds must be spent within the established expenditure window and the district has roughly three years to expend the remaining funds. McKe also said interest earnings on the bond balance have helped the district stretch capital projects without additional local tax dollars.
McKe noted other upcoming capital work—the high‑school chiller replacement is an anticipated future cost (he cited about $700,000)—and said the resurfacing project was chosen now because bond timing and project windows align. The presentation included contractor and scheduling details and showed how refinishing fits current maintenance needs and athletic programming requests for court markings.
What happens next: McKe requested board approval to proceed; the board voiced support in committee and may take formal action in the regular meeting agenda following committee recommendations.
