DODGE CITY ' Participants in a Dodge City school-board focus group told consultants they want a superintendent who combines strong character with day-to-day leadership skills and a willingness to try new approaches.
"Honesty, integrity" and an ability to lead the district day to day were among the first qualities raised by Ryan, who opened the session, and several participants repeated "accountability" as a top priority. Jamie said she wanted someone who is "open-minded," able to change longstanding practices when results lag.
The group also reviewed what the district does well. Speakers praised facilities and infrastructure upkeep, staff support and retention, fiscal responsibility, strong communication from district leadership and career and technical education programs. Jared described facility upkeep as a particular strength; several participants called staff commitment a competitive advantage for the district.
When asked to list the most critical needs the new superintendent must address, participants prioritized recruitment and retention of teachers and staff. Additional recurring concerns included student behavior and discipline, student accountability, middle-school overcrowding and safety and security. Several board members noted that the district's role inside an interlocal special-education arrangement adds implementation challenges that will require sustained attention.
Participants were also asked which single characteristic would separate the best candidate from other finalists. Responses included likeability, team-building ability, visionary leadership, competitiveness and a clear focus on student learning.
Consultants will compile the focus-group responses into a report for the board. The search team told the board it will return in January with vetted applicants and recommendations for which candidates to interview.
