Daly City Women’s Commission swears in Lizelle Chan Lucero and sets March 19 Women’s History Month event

Lizelle Chan Lucero was sworn in to the Daly City Women’s Commission at the group’s Feb. 26 meeting, taking the oath of office administered by Council member Jessa Manalo.

"I, Lizelle Chan Lucero, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of California," Lucero repeated during the oath before commissioners and city officials congratulated her.

Mayor Glenn Sylvester welcomed Lucero and thanked her for serving in the commission’s advisory role to the city. Lucero thanked Councilwoman Manalo and said she looked forward to serving Daly City and working with fellow commissioners; she introduced family members who attended the swearing-in.

The commission then turned to planning its Women’s History Month event. Commissioners discussed recognizing women who serve Daly City in a mix of categories used in 2024 (women of excellence, young women of excellence, organizations, and a "woman warrior" award). Members agreed that each commissioner should nominate one honoree or group and that organizers should avoid repeating 2024 recipients.

Commissioners discussed inviting Jackie Spear as a keynote speaker; Spear indicated she is available on March 19 but not the commission’s earlier date. Members agreed to move the event to March 19 if Spear accepts and to handle logistics around the change. The commission asked staff to circulate a short bio for Spear and to provide a template email honorees can receive with arrival time, program outline and RSVP instructions. Commissioners set a planning timetable: honoree names or group nominations should be submitted to staff (Natalie) by March 6.

Logistics discussed included holding a roughly 60–90 minute event with a 15-minute keynote, timed commendations for five honorees (individuals or group representatives), light refreshments and a small reception; the group indicated an event budget of about $500 and a preference to prioritize women-owned local vendors. Commissioners debated venue options—rotunda/Outdoor staging near the council chamber vs. inside the chambers—citing accessibility and audience comfort; staff said portable speakers and staging are available.

Promotion would use the city website and Instagram, with printed flyers in library branches and other community locations. Commissioners also noted the council will present a Women’s History Month proclamation on March 9 and encouraged attendance.

The meeting closed with routine reports and a motion to adjourn that passed.
