Accidental intruder-alert activation at CHS prompts debrief and student support plan

The board discussed a May 5 accidental activation of the intruder-alert (an eight-press signal) at Clayton High School and the safety committee's follow-up steps.

Board representative Chris reported on a May 4 safety-committee meeting and described new capabilities in the district's Stiggics response system that let on-site responders mark incident progress for administrators off-site. He said the accidental eight-press the next day did not involve an intruder, and that staff and students followed trained protocol.

A student advisory representative said the experience produced mixed reactions among students. "Half the kids in my class didn't believe it," the student said, describing a range of responses and the risk of desensitization when alerts occur accidentally.

Committee members and staff said the incident highlighted two priorities: technical and workflow improvements to reduce accidental activations (for example, exploring an audible confirmation or clearer device cues for users) and structured post-incident classroom supports. The district plans to provide teachers with brief, classroom-level debrief templates and to make counseling and wellness-center support available for students who need follow-up.

Administrators said they will continue training on correct badge use and study Stiggics configuration options with the vendor to reduce false activations. The board emphasized avoiding normalization of disruptive false alarms while ensuring the district's emergency protocols remain practiced and effective.
