Dolton marks one-year anniversary of Pope Leo XIV with portrait dedication and gift bust

Mayor Jason House hosted a dedication ceremony in Dolton on May 8, 2026, to mark the one-year anniversary of the election of Robert Francis Prevost as Pope Leo XIV, where local officials, clergy and donors gathered to bless a portrait and present a commemorative bust.

Vince Colbert, who partnered on the event, thanked the mayor and described how the village has been placed "on the global map" by Prevost's election, recalling "we saw that white smoke come out of the Sistine Chapel," and noting the community connections that led to the anniversary observance.

Father Pizzo, representing the Midwest Augustinian Friars, read a brief written message from Pope Leo XIV conveying "best wishes and appreciation" for using the house as a platform for social development. He framed the pontificate around two themes, saying the pope had emphasized "peace and church unity" and urging attendees to pray and act for local peacebuilding.

"Peace is born within the heart," Father Pizzo said during his remarks, and he led the assembly in a blessing of the portrait that concluded with an "Amen." The plaque accompanying the donation reads: "Pope Leo XIV American Legacy Foundation donated by Midwest Augustinian Friars, May 8th, 2026."

Organizers presented a miniature bust by Canadian sculptor Timothy Schmalz to the mayor; the full-size bust was installed earlier in Trujillo, Peru, where Prevost served as a missionary. Speakers said a small group of donors and organizers will travel in July to dedicate the larger work as part of a pilgrimage route described in the program as "La Ruta del Papa Leo."

The event mixed remarks, prayer and a mounting photo moment; organizers called groups through the home for photographs after the portrait was positioned for display. No formal motions, votes or policy actions were taken at the ceremony.

The village and supporting clergy said the portrait and bust are intended as local and international symbols of the pope's messages of unity and peace; attendees were invited to participate in the planned July dedication in Peru.
