The Clay County School Board voted May 14 to award a parking-lot resurfacing contract for Salana K8 to Rogers Group following a review of five bids opened earlier that day.
Board members noted two outlier bids during the discussion: one bid with a substantially higher undercutting line item and one unusually low bid. Staff and board members discussed bidder reputations and the option to hire an independent project overseer or consultant to monitor adherence to specifications if the board chose a lower-priced contractor. Several board members said the bidders with local presence alleviated concerns about contractors "rolling through" and not completing work.
On a motion by Mr. Ashlock, seconded by Mr. West, the board approved awarding the contract to Rogers Group as the low bidder. During discussion members asked how undercutting would be handled in the field; staff explained that contractors would notify the district and require authorization for extra undercut work beyond the submitted bid.
The board instructed staff to proceed with contract execution and, where needed, to secure project oversight if the board later determined it appropriate. The motion passed on a roll-call vote.
