Zeta Pujo, the district’s director of food services, told the board that a seven‑day interest survey for the USDA summer feeding program produced responses from more than 600 families, representing roughly 1,600 children ages 1–18 in the school district.
Pujo explained the program provides free meals for children without income requirements: when a family registers they will receive a weekly box containing seven breakfasts, seven lunches and milk. Students enrolled in summer school, YMCA, Boys & Girls Club or licensed daycare already receive meals through federal reimbursement and will not receive the full seven‑day box, but they will receive meals for the days outside their program as appropriate.
Registration opens in person on May 28 to distribute car tags that identify family meal counts. Pujo said Danville High School will serve as the drive‑thru pick‑up site and district staff are working on mobile community locations. She said ordering has begun in anticipation of demand and lactose‑free milk will be available on request.
Board members thanked staff and encouraged broad community outreach so families in need are aware of the opportunity.
