Finance committee backs salary resolution with CPI tweak after split vote

The Lee County Finance Committee recommended that the full county board forward last months compensation resolution for elected officials with a single modification: use the consumer price index as the lesser of the annual increase and ensure "the CPI cannot go below zero," Finance Committee chair Jim Sheeline said.

Sheeline, speaking at the county board meeting, said the base salary increase proposed last month otherwise remains unchanged. He told members the committees deliberations focused on timing and ensuring the board had appropriate information before final action; the committee vote was reported as 3 2.

The committee chair also flagged recent downward movement in some income and sales tax revenue collections and noted the countys formal budget process is scheduled to begin next month, signaling that fiscal pressures are an important context for any compensation decision.

The Finance Committees recommendation moves the item to the full Lee County Board for consideration. If the board adopts the resolution as recommended, the change would implement CPI-limited increases for the affected offices while keeping the previously proposed baseline pay adjustments in place.

A county official said no final action was taken at the meeting; the item is expected to appear on the county board agenda for formal consideration. The committees split vote and revenue concerns make the measure likely to draw attention during the next board meeting.
