Richland One forgives March 16 makeup day under state code; board also approves related employee waiver

The Richland One Board voted unanimously May 12 to forgive March 16, 2026, as a makeup day under South Carolina Code 59-1-425 after district schools closed for inclement weather and built-in makeup days were exhausted.

Dr. Williams explained that the district had built three makeup days into the 2025–26 calendar; one e-learning day had already been used to cover January 26, leaving no built-in days to cover March 16. The administration recommended the board forgive that single day; the board moved, seconded and approved the recommendation unanimously.

Following an executive session the board also approved an administrative waiver for employees impacted by the inclement-weather closure, which the administration recommended and the board approved unanimously.

What happens next: The board's action treats March 16 as forgiven for students; staff said administrative details for employee waivers were processed through human resources in the public session that followed the executive session.
