Residents urge 'people-first' street design during Holland City Council public comment

Several Holland residents used the council's public-comment period to press for more pedestrian-friendly streets and crossings. Megan Herszog, a mother of two who identified herself as a Holland resident, said safety concerns keep her family from walking and biking more often and urged council to "consider investing in making our downtown area ... more people first." She said such investments would benefit public health and children's independence.

Ann Henrikson, who identified herself as from Zeeland, thanked the city for recent volunteer and religious events tied to Tulip Time and described upcoming faith-based community events seeking city permits in June and September.

Katie Kuja encouraged the council to adopt a locally developed "small bets" pedestrian proposal and walked council through specific crossing locations she said are pedestrian-friendly (midblock crossings on 8th and 9th streets, raised crosswalks on 10th Street) and spots that present safety or access problems (low-visibility underpasses, push-button signals that do not change for bicyclists). She asked the council to brainstorm neighborhood priorities and signaled she would follow up by email.

The mayor closed public comment after the three speakers. Council did not take immediate action during the meeting, but the comments fed into later discussion of transportation and capital budgets presented at the same session.
