The Phoenix-Talent SD 4 board discussed a pool of 12 student-representative applicants and agreed on a process for interviewing and selecting new student reps. Board members changed application questions to ask candidates to review a policy and gather student perspectives, and they agreed applicants will give short presentations to the board.
Board members recommended that applicants prepare concise, focused presentations on one of three policies, and suggested a presentation window of roughly three minutes with up to five minutes available if needed. Staff offered to meet with applicants to provide presentation frameworks and to call applicants directly (in addition to email) to confirm logistics.
Student involvement and public comment
Board members debated whether applicants should sit together and watch each other's presentations. Some members preferred individual, one-at-a-time presentations to reduce repetition and nerves; others noted hearing peers can improve later presentations. The board also discussed announcing results by email to avoid public embarrassment for students who are not selected.
Why it matters
The student-representative role provides a direct channel for student voices in board governance. The board adjusted the application and interview process to focus applicant work on policy review and to make the evaluation process more consistent and equitable.
Next steps
Staff will notify applicants about the interview format, meet with them to help prepare concise presentations and schedule the interviews at a future board meeting. The board asked for a headcount of members who will attend the student-rep interview meeting.
