City of George and Quincy staff team up on proposed soccer field at George Elementary; grant sought

District staff briefed the board on a concept to place a regulation soccer field on district-owned land adjacent to George Elementary and to partner with the City of George on a Washington RCO grant application.

A facilities presenter explained the concept drawing and said the city intends to leverage a $100,000 local donation to apply for an RCO grant that could provide approximately $500,000 for construction, lighting and fencing. The proposed site is on district property; staff said final siting is conceptual and that some ADA parking would need to move to preserve future expansion zones. The project was described as a phase-one effort (soccer field, lighting and fencing) with phases two and three contingent on additional funding.

Board members raised questions about parking, playground impacts, field maintenance responsibilities, and how the district and city would apportion upkeep costs; staff said arrangements would be addressed in a future agreement if the grant is awarded. Presenters noted the field would give the community and students daytime access and said the grant review timeline anticipates announcements in the summer.

No formal action was taken; staff said they would report back with grant results and any recommended agreements.
