Recreation staff briefed the advisory board on progress and expectations for facility upgrades funded through the city's CPF grant and related capital investments.
The director outlined three CPF-funded projects (Elwood, David Lopes and Joslyn) that will be repurposed as community learning centers with programming requirements in health, workforce development and education. Staff said an RFP for programming tied to the CPF renovations will open June 15 and that the sites will have mandated programmatic elements for at least five years. The director credited coordination with public property and public safety in managing construction timelines.
Board members asked about Kennedy, where demolition has begun. Staff said design renderings show a split-use model with separate school and recreation entrances and that the new design aims to give the recreation component a clearer identity than in the past. Baby Lo (David Lopes) is slated for completion in June and the department plans to shift operations there when it's ready.
No formal vote was taken; staff will continue coordination with partners and report on timelines and bid outcomes in future meetings.
