Commission approves several land-use changes to add housing; one rezoning withdrawn

Athens-Clarke County commissioners on May 5 approved multiple land-use actions intended to expand housing supply and manage project timelines.

A developer’s withdrawal was approved for a rezoning request at 155 Whit Davis Road after the applicant asked to remove the item from the agenda. Commissioners then held a multi-parcel planning-and-zoning matter for 4190 Lexington Road/150 Pine Cone Place/128–140 Merch Lane at the applicant’s request, moving that review to the June voting meeting to allow staff and the civil-engineering team additional time to refine the proposal.

Two rezoning approvals cleared the agenda. The commission approved a future land use map amendment and rezoning that will allow mixed-density residential use for approximately 6 acres at 1930 New Jimmy Daniel Road; Commissioner Johnson described an initial phase of 32 condo units and said the project will provide a range of housing types. Earlier, the body voted to hold the Lexington-area project for one cycle at the developer’s request.

Attorney Drake read the ordinances and commissioners unanimously carried the motions where no objections were recorded. Planning staff said additional administrative reviews, fire-marshal determinations and site plan refinements remain before building permits are issued.
